What Is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a finishing type that is applied as a dry powder. It is administered through an electrostatic spray gun and cured at 400 degrees. Once cooled, the powder coat finish is tougher than normal paint and twice as thick. Powder coat is also available in a large selection of colors to match any setting.

1. Sandblast

First, the metal product is blasted to a white finish. This process removes old paint, rust, and other impurities. Additionally, it creates a profiled surface that helps the primer bond to the metal.

2. Prime

Second, an epoxy primer is applied to the metal and cured at 400 degrees. Primer is 1/10th the particle size of powder and melts deeply into the metal surface.

3. Powder Coat

Last, powder coat is applied to the product and again cured at 400 degrees.

Benefits Of Powder Coating:

Durable Finish

During the curing process, the powder melts. This creates a chemical bond that gels together and allows for flexibility if the product wobbles or moves. Additionally, powder coat is twice as thick as most paints.
