In Memory Of Rosenda Smiley
A Bench That Speaks Against Drunk Driving
On May 25, 2024, Rosenda was tragically killed by a drunk driver while crossing the road in Newport Beach. In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, her family has taken meaningful steps to honor her life and to advocate for drunk driving reform.

Memorial Bench
Designed For Rosenda
In the midst of deep grief, the Smiley family came together to find a purposeful way to honor Rose’s life. They hoped to create something that would bring healing and serve as a lasting tribute to the light she shared with others. After much thought, they chose to create memorial benches in her honor.
The family was able to secure four locations willing to place a memorial bench on their property: San Bernardino Animal Shelter, Rocky’s Roadhouse Restaurant, Lake Gregory Regional Park, and Firehouse Park. Each of these spots held special significance to Rose.
For the bench itself, the family incorporated some of Rose’s favorite things: mushrooms, sunsets, the ocean, butterflies, hummingbirds, dogs, cats, and a portrait of her.
Spreading Awareness
In light of Rose’s tragic death, caused by a drunk driver with two previous DUI convictions, Dr. Fillmore Smiley is now advocating for “Rosenda’s Law.” This proposed legislation calls for mandatory treatment for repeat DUI offenders and tougher penalties for those with multiple violations. The goal is to help ensure that no other family has to endure a similar loss.
Glori Smiley shares, “I made her a promise that night—that something good would come from this heartbreak. That promise lives on in our commitment to advocate for change in how we educate and treat DUI offenders. It’s the only way to ensure no other family has to endure this unbearable, unimaginable, and utterly preventable pain.”
May 25th has been officially recognized as “Rosenda’s Day” in California. Established through an Assembly resolution, the day honors Rose’s memory, brings awareness to the consequences of impaired driving, and encourages communities to work toward safer roads for all.

On behalf of Smith Steelworks, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the Smiley family for allowing us to help create these beautiful memorial benches in honor of Rose. May her light continue to shine.
