9/11 Victim Memorial Bench

At Smith Steelworks, we create custom remembrance benches designed to honor and preserve the memory of loved ones who have passed. This special 9/11 victim memorial bench was built in remembrance of Timothy D. Betterly, who tragically lost his life during the Twin Towers attack on September 11, 2001.

If you would like to honor someone special with a memorial bench, contact Smith Steelworks at (801) 960-6323 today.

Classmates Design 9/11 Victim Memorial Bench

An Honor to Design

This bench started with just Timothy Betterly’s name. Then with suggestions from old friends and classmates, our designer added a special cutout of the Twin Towers and a heartfelt message from Tim’s high school class of 1977—celebrating his bold spirit and his nickname, “Sprout”.

A Community Coming Together

While the Smith Steelworks team built this special memorial bench, the WHS Class of ’77 collaborated with Wissahickon High to find a lasting home for the bench in front of the school.

Friends Remember

After setting the bench in concrete, ensuring it’s lasting impact, WHS hosted their Annual 9/11 Memorial Concert and Vigil. Two of Timothy Betterly’s old classmates joined with his brothers to do a small dedication of the bench. Ultimately, 9/11 was a nationwide calamity that came with deeply personal loss.

A Special Tribute for Timothy Betterly

On September 11, 2001 nearly 3,000 lives were lost—including Timothy D. Betterly. To make sure “Sprout” wasn’t just a name in a catastrophe, his friends and community came together to create a lasting tribute: a custom powder-coated memorial bench built to keep his memory alive for years to come.
